<br />
The Battle of Hastings was fought on the 16th October 1066 between William the Duke of Normandy and the Anglo-Saxon king Harold. The outcome of this battle would change the course of English history dramatically.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Because I live in Hastings, playing a wargame on this battle has always been a must. I have two different versions of wargames based on Hastings. One is from the Age of Chivalry Quad, published by 3W and designed by Rob Markham. The other is an S&T magazine game designed by Richard Berg.<br />
<br />
I went for the 3W game mainly because I know the game system, which is an off-shoot of the Royalist and Roundheads system, so it meant I could get the game started in a very short time, without the need to read the rules through and without the inevitable page flicking the rule book whilst playing.<br />
<br />
I wanted to do with this game was to see how accurate (depending on the sources) the map detail and army forces are. Yes, I have checked out resources online, which to be fair, is an easy way to find general information, but I also have a copy of A.H. Burne's The Battlefields of England, which is interesting as he writes very much with a military mind, and of course offers his own opinions with that mind set.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeYGktXMipaJHm_-nj4CI0aU5V3eRrc1A9Gzfj3u0f98C_s8DgvPzldPdG54LLwG_6FfDCtti6G3xKnLVi1KHf_EkCGmRhKiN_U2H_m4kRXEYO7P3ALsJHWRx_8M-NTx8-SWxzlgjtGgUr/s1600/20150718_223558.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeYGktXMipaJHm_-nj4CI0aU5V3eRrc1A9Gzfj3u0f98C_s8DgvPzldPdG54LLwG_6FfDCtti6G3xKnLVi1KHf_EkCGmRhKiN_U2H_m4kRXEYO7P3ALsJHWRx_8M-NTx8-SWxzlgjtGgUr/s320/20150718_223558.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The map for this game conforms to most of the resources I have come across (and is extremely similar to A.H Burne's map). What minor differences I came across could really be subject to differences of opinions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFYTfCd3tZppo8GX3-NtWAkGDxegp8wNIKVskPBAwGXN5oh1-3IK9Ck-uNlko_hyicDlohSFpD7uXSsOJ2v3iuW7IG3ioNTi7c-g2nJpSCRo3eVzeXZjVl4rWvTp3rHuDD0r4rdFpV26qj/s1600/20150718_213733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFYTfCd3tZppo8GX3-NtWAkGDxegp8wNIKVskPBAwGXN5oh1-3IK9Ck-uNlko_hyicDlohSFpD7uXSsOJ2v3iuW7IG3ioNTi7c-g2nJpSCRo3eVzeXZjVl4rWvTp3rHuDD0r4rdFpV26qj/s320/20150718_213733.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The forces involved is a problem, as there seems to be no concrete record, and some of the various sources I have seen vary greatly, but there does seem to be a general idea that both side had between 9-10 thousand men each.<br />
<br />
<b>About the game.</b><br />
<br />
This battle has two game lengths - 16 turns for the Battle scenario and 19 turns for the Campaign scenario. The difference being is that the Battle scenarios has the counters starting within certain hexes on the map, and the campaign has no counters on the map, but there are entry hexes where the counters can start arriving. The latter gives the player a bit more control has to how and where to position his units, which is similar to Legion by Society of Ancients.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi09RGB45gcKjZETVL_FQ9LkcvadgaRGve9nsvpy3vMe6ROgXUja_-rqwmBIX3tik6hCOdywuY46IzOhgeP6nOYh3dgsZMoWCVgfkY3VM4o5RrMCN4efcxn1n-BndCYxuidwKk5qnKSqQS0/s1600/20150718_223723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi09RGB45gcKjZETVL_FQ9LkcvadgaRGve9nsvpy3vMe6ROgXUja_-rqwmBIX3tik6hCOdywuY46IzOhgeP6nOYh3dgsZMoWCVgfkY3VM4o5RrMCN4efcxn1n-BndCYxuidwKk5qnKSqQS0/s320/20150718_223723.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided on the Battle scenario and positioned the armies like so, Saxons in the North, Normans to the South.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the interesting aspects of the Royalists & Roundheads system is the Commands or Orders. At the beginning of the scenario, each leader and overall leader is given a Command marker - Attack, Advance, Stand, Retreat, Reserve and Muster. At the start of subsequent game turns, they can either stay with those Commands or try to change them, but there is always the chance the change could fail and they will carry on with their existing orders - sometimes with dire results!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Movement and combat is handled pretty much in the standard way for hex and counter games, and with combat, the sequence is defensive (non-phasing player) then offensive (phasing player) fire followed by melee. Cavalry can charge as long as the command they are in are under Attack orders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another interesting aspect to this game, is the Unit Type Modifier Table, which may give column shifts on the Combat Results Table depending on what type of unit is attacking or defending.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Facing is done with the hex apex to the front, so you have two front, two flank and two rear zones of control.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSgmU_XtEIQLYM5NaECw8yinq2DNuIbDgT-zEo6zTTF-k86E2QbiU0R_zhD3-fKU7RD0Qm_juT6fWWYTewtCfyjSR-JTn064b73hV3dXDpqfgQL3l6fU3MCOUoO_Jv-aSroPUTQyQFQ7I4/s1600/20150724_203437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSgmU_XtEIQLYM5NaECw8yinq2DNuIbDgT-zEo6zTTF-k86E2QbiU0R_zhD3-fKU7RD0Qm_juT6fWWYTewtCfyjSR-JTn064b73hV3dXDpqfgQL3l6fU3MCOUoO_Jv-aSroPUTQyQFQ7I4/s320/20150724_203437.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stacking is not allowed, but is at setup stage only if specified in the scenario setup. Once stacked units split, they cannot re-stack.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Morale checks are done for individual units due to results from combat. If they fail, they rout, but they can recover from this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>My Game.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The game starts with the Saxons strung out across Senlac Hill (Santlache or Sandlake) using the Stand command. This command will give them a bonus when attack plus a Shield Wall bonus. The Dukes forces are in three small groups - Bretons on the left, Normans in the middle, and French to the right. They all start with the Advance command.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglEfjZ2jn5DsQLAu2W74RWkKBKWwbOsK5w08nCJA1yeeuDpTaJ5vTxmOqiFrSvVxkW01VN7uz7u551Nsj3RX_BhZtmOYcqQW2aN_N8WLLFV-2mN-5QgV7bvOOE4oLoHxpdDErI9Wzg0jYz/s1600/20150718_223723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglEfjZ2jn5DsQLAu2W74RWkKBKWwbOsK5w08nCJA1yeeuDpTaJ5vTxmOqiFrSvVxkW01VN7uz7u551Nsj3RX_BhZtmOYcqQW2aN_N8WLLFV-2mN-5QgV7bvOOE4oLoHxpdDErI9Wzg0jYz/s320/20150718_223723.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Dukes forces move and advance first, with their archers trying to soften up the Saxon line before the infantry arrives. My poor dice rolling (nothing unusual here) meant the archers proved very ineffective.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Breton infantry make contact with the Saxons first, with their cavalry trying to take out the Saxon slingers. The Saxon Shield Wall does it's job and the Bretons attack fails, with some of them routing. Sensing there is a chance to destroy the Bretons, the Saxon Leader who faced the Bretons change their command and take the fight to them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meanwhile the Norman Archers are having slightly better luck with their archers and manage to reduce some Saxon units before the Norman infantry go in. The French on the right try to take out the small number of units on the Saxon left flank.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis89wIb43UdI-qfY1sr0vcdiWmY7eeL42WHju8ZDF4c7pZAxWy9YmDqIGrPzznsYWyHERpQYLX0310r3bqs788cIhF4GGDNdvRWzh3iguZKuUBuM1UND7AWu_kE4XARqYVk4c2CuezYY6E/s1600/20150724_224026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis89wIb43UdI-qfY1sr0vcdiWmY7eeL42WHju8ZDF4c7pZAxWy9YmDqIGrPzznsYWyHERpQYLX0310r3bqs788cIhF4GGDNdvRWzh3iguZKuUBuM1UND7AWu_kE4XARqYVk4c2CuezYY6E/s320/20150724_224026.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By turn 4, it has gone really bad for the Bretons, as they have lost units and what is left has lost cohesion. The Saxons start to persue and also turn some units into the centre to threaten the Norman right. The Normans and the French are still slugging it out against a formidable shield wall, making minimal gains.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Turn 6, and the Bretons are really struggling and are basically running away with the Saxons in persuit, which results in the Bretons losing their Leader, and are now being commanded by a subordinate Leader. The rest of the Dukes army is really making slow progress, and the Saxons are really gaining the upper hand and continually to push further into the centre, causing great alarm to the Normans in the centre.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Bretons change their command to Muster, which allows their leader to a better chance to gather his troops together (what is left) to form up and to try and be a cohesive force again.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By turn 10, it is already looking very tricky for the Duke. Although he has broken the Shield Wall, The Saxons that were perusing the Bretons, are now engaging the Duke's Normans in the centre. The French have also broken the wall and are on the hill, but these breakthroughs are too little too late. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Bretons, who are still intacked, are stuck on the Muster command and are unable to come off it, rendering them useless on the battlefield and no threat to the Saxons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By turn 12, it was looking even worse for the Duke even though he had made advances on the Saxon line on Senlac Hill. The Breton's were still refusing to take part in the action, unable to come off their Muster Command.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Duke had by Turn 11, destroyed enough Saxons to be able to roll on the "Sudden Death" victory chart. He succeeded in turn 12 to win this game using the "Sudden Death". The day was won for the Duke through more luck than judgement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>My Opinion.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, I do like the Royalist & Roundhead system, and I certainly enjoyed this game, as it played well, quick and fast, and with an alarming similarity to the actual battle. The Commands system is good, as it shows how problematic it could be for the Main Leader to be able to change the Commands of his subordinate leaders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My only dislike is the Sudden Death Victory, but this is something you do not have to use, and I could have carried on playing until one side was wiped off, or beyond any hope of victory.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The map graphics are fine as are the counter graphics - fully functional for want of a better expression.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rules are well laid out and easy to understand.</div>

<br />
Ottoman Sunset is a solitaire game from VPG, which is a game from their States of Siege series. You play the role as leader of the Young Turks (the government of the time), trying to hold together the last remnants of the Ottoman Empire during World War 1.<br />
<br />
I have played this game three times now, and I have really enjoyed it. It is a strategic level wargame in its scope, and the battlefronts which the Ottomans were involved with are dealt in a very simplified way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-jmfqUDQdmO0lpzdh6ZZSr0RRDkTGzftLzBr5zUaDfr4p14q6wWTbNrDbfzLfgUEPHIZGbcdNEcE4PiHJTONkHOhZuYaR7g9r7q4Qzf2A1ZRYNRJ9ZNyQxGLTqa-_iP39h5ki7gYJwz6A/s1600/20150105_212545.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-jmfqUDQdmO0lpzdh6ZZSr0RRDkTGzftLzBr5zUaDfr4p14q6wWTbNrDbfzLfgUEPHIZGbcdNEcE4PiHJTONkHOhZuYaR7g9r7q4Qzf2A1ZRYNRJ9ZNyQxGLTqa-_iP39h5ki7gYJwz6A/s1600/20150105_212545.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The game is driven by Event cards, which details which Theatre of War you have to dice for, which of the six Fronts are advanced or retreated, and how many Actions the player is allowed to make. It also give a small historic brief of actual events which occurred during the war.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The cards bring into play a lot of counters which really add a lot of interesting aspects to this game, which can be an advantage...or not! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzVkq63ZrIJro17zKvFt2IK3V1hJQpqofJpnHhk8w3ZwXIUeUsbwiNs32-H7CjRFt32djHLf53vEhzaSzxMYRTKskV4panLZMG8tSbuyZcyz8m6ey-3Alr4eB3dPI8SWQP3mxXE1XQdElo/s1600/os_2nded_card_sample_1_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzVkq63ZrIJro17zKvFt2IK3V1hJQpqofJpnHhk8w3ZwXIUeUsbwiNs32-H7CjRFt32djHLf53vEhzaSzxMYRTKskV4panLZMG8tSbuyZcyz8m6ey-3Alr4eB3dPI8SWQP3mxXE1XQdElo/s1600/os_2nded_card_sample_1_4.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are three ways in which to lose, but more importantly, only one way to win, and that is to still be active when the last event card has been drawn and used, after which, it is a case of working out the various Victory Points you have accumulated and checking to see what level of victory has been achieved.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This game is from their medieval series, and yet again the components are very nice. I would like to say I will get this on the table soon, but I doubt it, as I am planning to play the other game I bought from them - Borodino1812 - next, and then after that....well who knows, some Panzer Grenadier or some ACW (Across Five Aprils by VG)<br />

What was even better it only cost me £2! They were also selling of some other VPG games at a reduced price, so I also picked up Jena 20 and Katzbach 20, for £8 & £10 respectively. Fun gaming times ahead!</p>

Sabin and published by <a href="http://fifthcolumngames.co.uk/" target="_blank">Fifth Column Games </a><br />
<br />
I am onto my second battle and I must admit it is a brilliant game to play.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pyNm39y6LQS76ktjBR2zftuD_f0YpHbXkpOVMZN5vYhjof7kvAxafwJV1Bya-9DTZzDKTpNvu72a6vQKSLd64444MbsOXfg9a1XeUEMcQr6-ztapRNLUk1oJUU6-oMA41JZRbf7l8hHT/s1600/2013-10-19+08.35.11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pyNm39y6LQS76ktjBR2zftuD_f0YpHbXkpOVMZN5vYhjof7kvAxafwJV1Bya-9DTZzDKTpNvu72a6vQKSLd64444MbsOXfg9a1XeUEMcQr6-ztapRNLUk1oJUU6-oMA41JZRbf7l8hHT/s1600/2013-10-19+08.35.11.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The best way to describe this game is a cross-over wargame, as it has aspects found in tabletop wargaming, mixed with a bit of hex and counter wargames, with a splash of area movement, but it works really well.<br />
<br />
The games comes with loads of 4" square terrain tiles (different terrain types) which are laid out in a 5x4 grid, using the correct terrain as per the scenario you are playing, along with the cardboard counters. (there are over 30 scenarios!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGk0Wmyo935s80BqI-7h931Owk0WEnojl3d8_8q4lRbybEzYrL-Zz9HlfZ723aJXG-Kg7kyE2NhPsGmq2gzqpKyTGYk_p_upJKvjUExDx-ZbVMxqRE91X6OgOBMOaZK7nKi40v4xr9C98S/s1600/2014-01-11+20.41.30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGk0Wmyo935s80BqI-7h931Owk0WEnojl3d8_8q4lRbybEzYrL-Zz9HlfZ723aJXG-Kg7kyE2NhPsGmq2gzqpKyTGYk_p_upJKvjUExDx-ZbVMxqRE91X6OgOBMOaZK7nKi40v4xr9C98S/s1600/2014-01-11+20.41.30.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Each army is limited in how many command points it gets at the start of their turn, which is dependent on how many units they have left on the field, and these can be used to do various actions with individual units or groups. Movement and attack are from tile to tile, and each scenario games last 9 turns, or 10 turns if using the deployment option.<br />
<br />
At the end of the game, victory points are calculated, where they have a unique handicap formula so as not to make it impossible for a smaller army to lose all the time.<br />

Although the game plays in a slightly abstract way, this allows the game to demonstrate the difficulties these armies had and the differences with fighting with different classes of soldiers (veteran, average or levy) and the different types (legion, hoplite, cavalry, elephants etc).<br />

<br />
I really enjoyed playing this game. It has loads of replay value, games can be played in an evening, and gives me a good chance to really analyze these actual battles in detail, as the game has been designed to express a high degree of historical accuracy and feel (if you know what I mean). Although a 2 player game, it is well suited for solo play.<br />
<br />
It also contains an additional game called Empire, which is more of a campaign game around the great clashes of the Ancient World, and is a reprint of the original which can still be bought from the <a href="http://www.soa.org.uk/cartloom/games/" target="_blank">Society of Ancients website</a>.<br />
<br />
If you like your ancient battles, this is a must (in my opinion), but they are hard to come buy and can be expensive to buy second hand.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05215605210887310074noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5918944248704650602.post-21754403570613426422013-12-24T10:00:00.001+00:002013-12-24T10:00:06.718+00:00Slingshot 289<p dir="ltr">Slingshot 289 arrived this morning, which was a nice surprise. <span style="font-family: inherit;">However, I failed to do this when playing Cheren, so the game I wanted to play next is still in the "rule reading" stage, meaning I had nothing on the table to play. Which is why I dug out this game, as the rules are pretty standard issue and were quick to read and learn, so it made for an ideal time filler.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here is a description from the <a href="https://shop.decisiongames.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1614">DG website</a>:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">The port-town of Tobruk was the key to Libya. The Axis had been besieging it since April 1941, threatening to push the Allies back into Egypt. The Afrikakorps, commanded by Irwin Rommel, had already defeated the Allies’ previous attempt to relieve Tobruk, Operation Battleaxe, but a new, surprise Allied offensive in November 1941, Operation Crusader, would evolve into one of the most chaotic and near-run battles of the entire North African campaign. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Crusader utilizes the new Fire & Movement combat system that’s designed so players can augment their units with “support fire” during the course of the battle. From mortars to tanks, units can receive support assets to engage enemy positions and formations, allowing combat to develop at all levels. A single recon battalion, for example — perhaps supported by air cover — could be tasked to assault a lone enemy infantry regiment defending a key hilltop. As that attack gets underway, the recon battalion may find itself under the guns of enemy artillery. So more support fire will be necessary to take the hill, but assets are limited.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">In Crusader, the attritional design of the new Combat Results Table simulates the true nature of battles in North Africa. Units are typically two-sided formations that can incur casualties, accurately replicating the realities of combat and the high losses sustained by both sides during the actual fighting around Tobruk. Winning the battle is thus a matter of maneuver, firepower and asset management.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I bought this game direct from Revolution Games for $15 (this was a special offer price, normal price is $21 - still a good price!), and was shipped to me in the UK for $6, which was really good value. The game comes in a ziplock bag and contains the following:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">11 x 17" map</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">113 doublesided die-cut counters</span><br style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;" /><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">4 page rule book</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 Information sheet which is on the reverse of the front cover of the game.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The components for this game are good quality. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The map is printed on sturdy card (probably around 200gsm thick) and has a glossy finish. The detail on the map is really nicely done. The terrain is well defined and has no obvious ambiguous areas, and the charts and turn track are well positioned, especially for solo play, even though it is a game for 1-2 players.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The counters are of good quality, back printed, clearly printed and functional (just how I like counters to be - elaborate and over the top designed counters I feel are messy and ruin the ability of being able to identify units quickly). </span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">They have been covered in a glossy film, which may give them a bit more protection, though I did find it a little irritating with light reflection, but that is a minor issue.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The rule book is well laid out and indexed and cross-referenced well. I did download the Living Rules and use them, but from what I can gather, there has been very little errata for this game, so playing the game without the Living Rules would not be a problem.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">All in all, a neat little package. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><b><u>Game Report.</u></b></span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">From Revolutions website:</span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, adobe-helvetica, 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 18px;"><b><span style="color: #cc0000;">The road to Cheren is our new game covering the Eritrea campaign in East Africa in 1941. The campaign featured British and French forces versus the Italians in a wild and mountainous country. The game was designed by Kim Kanger who also designed Ici, c’est la France, Tonkin, and the soon to be released Dien Bien Phu, all by Legion Wargames.</span></b></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, adobe-helvetica, 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 18px;"><b><br /></b></span></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, adobe-helvetica, 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 18px;"><b>Cheren is a game where the movement of each piece is critical. After movement your opponent may react but with only a few units, making player decisions difficult; do I go to the aid of a unit likely to be attacked or use my reaction to push troops forward in an area where I am on the offensive. After combat there is exploitation movement. Only motorized infantry, tanks and cavalry may exploit and are scarce in this campaign. In addition there is a very nice chit pull system to give both sides some special abilities and keep the enemy guessing as to what comes next. Finally some Italian native units may decide to join the Allies, or they may stay loyal, which creates extra tension in the game.</b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, adobe-helvetica, 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 18px;"><b><br /></b></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, adobe-helvetica, 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 18px;">The game lasts for 12 turns, with the Allies having the first turn. The Allies need at least 22 Victory Points to win, and this is achieved by capturing various towns and villages.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>

Here is a view of the setup from the Vassal mod. Various reinforcements come on for both sides on certain turns, and the Allies also get some Air Support from turn 3</span></span><br />

<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By the end of Turn 6, the Allies are really putting pressure on the Italians. However, the Italians did give them a hard time over the towns of Barentu and Agordat, and even though the Allies eventually took these towns, it did delay the Allied advance. By Turn 6, the Allies are also starting to have reinforcements arrive from the North, which adds concern to the Italians.</span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the Allies keep pushing the Italians back to gain the VP's they need to win, the Italians are putting up a good job of holding them off.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The last turns are a worry for the Italians, as the Allies have captured the town of Cheren and have the superior strength to capture the all important and highly prized town of Asmara, as capturing this town would give the Allies victory.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To the South, the Italians have halted the Allied advance, as they have a stronger force their and control the higher ground.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unfortunately, it was all to much for the Allies, as the Italians were able to hold them off long enough to deny the Allies victory.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b><u>My Opinion</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The game turns are reasonably quick, and as the turns progress, it does get rather tense. In the game I played, it was clear by turn 10 that the Allies would not reach their goal, but it could so easily have gone to the final turn, and I think that could be quite typical of this game as there are so many different towns and villages which can give the Allies valuable Victory Points.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Allies also do have quite a few options available to them, in respect to what objectives to go for. This gives the Italian player a dilemma as to where to move his reinforcements, as he has to make sure he has enough to contain the Allies.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Natives which become activated are also a problem for the Italians, as it is on the dice as to whether or not they stay loyal or join the Allies</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Both sides have chits which allow them to perform certain actions, but these can be limited and have to be used carefully, which adds a nice variable to the game.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Units can have supply problems if they stray too far from their supply routes - or get cut off from them, a tactic the Italians can use to great effect to slow down the Allies! If they remain out of supply, this could be disastrous for the unit concerned, as it will end up having to suffer step losses.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is a nice concept of soft and hard ZOC in this game (never seen this before), as this is determined by the stacking points</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I did enjoy enjoy playing this game a lot. There are a lot of neat little touches to this game which makes it stand out from the normal run-of-the-mill wargame and it has enough about it to be highly replayable, even from a solo point of view.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This game will definitely be hitting the table again soon!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10/10</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
After trying different sites and formats, I have decided to go with Blogger. This is because I can easily post items on my PC or my smart phone, any pictures I take on my phone go straight to my Google account and I can use easily on Blogger. Plus, it is easy to navigate and control.<br />
<br />
I do not imagine for one minute I will get a big audience, and even if I only get an odd visit every month, it will be enough for me, as using Blogger is more of a way to record my progress and experiences in wargaming, so I can look back on my own history of playing these games.<br />
<br />
My first dozen posts on here were pretty plain and uniteresting affairs, where I just posted a picture with a small amount of text as this was during my time of experimenting with various platforms.<br />
Now that Blogger is my chosen platform, my posts will be more substantial, similar to my last post (Road to Cheren) and a previous post on Teutenburger Wald game I played.<br />

<br />
I bought this game direct from <a href="http://www.revolutiongames.us/">Revolution Games</a> in America for $21 (including postage!), and it arrived in a week, which is really good.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
It was designed by a relative newcomer to the wargame scene, Kim Kanger, who has a few other games being published by <a href="http://www.legionwargames.com/">Legion Wargames</a>.<br />
<br />
Here is the description of the game from the website:<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, 'lucida grande', arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 14px;">The road to Cheren is our new game covering the Eritrea campaign in East Africa in 1941. The campaign featured British and French forces versus the Italians in a wild and mountainous country. Cheren is a game where the movement of each piece is critical. Finally some Italian native units may decide to join the Allies, or they may stay loyal, which creates extra tension in the game</span><br />
<br />
Components for this games consist of:<br />
11 x 17" map<br />
113 doublesided die-cut counters<br />
4 page rule book<br />
